THE PRETERITE TENSE
The preterite expresses an action or actions completed in the past. The English translation is usually the simple past
(for example, I worked). The preterite is used to express the following.
* Actions completed in the past
* A series of completed actions in the past
* Conditions no longer in effect
Formation of the Preterite
Verbs are considered regular if there is no change in the stem. Most verbs are regular in the preterite. This tense is formed by adding the preterite endings to the stem of the infinitive of -ar, -er, and -ir verbs.
Regular -ar Verbs
In order to conjugate a regular -ar verb in the preterite tense, drop the ending and add -é, áste, ó, -amos, asteis, -aron to the stem. All -ar verbs except andar, dar, and estar are regular in the preterite.

tú ayudaste vosotros ayudasteis tú cantaste vosotros cantasteis
él ayudó Uds. ayudaron él cantó Uds. cantaron
ella ayudó ellos ayudaron ella cantó ellos cantaron
Ud. ayudó ellas ayudaron Ud. cantó ellas cantaron
Regular -er and -ir Verbs
In order to conjugate regular -er and -ir verbs, drop the ending and add -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron to the stem. The endings are the same for both -er and -ir verbs.
-Er Verbs
comer entender yo comí nosotros comimos yo entendí nosotros entendimos
tú comiste vosotros comisteis tú entendiste vosotos entendisteis
él comió Uds. comieron él entendió Uds. entendieron
ella comió ellos comieron ella entendió ellos entendieron
Ud. comió ellas comieron Ud. entendió ellas entendieron
ver
yo vi nosotros vimos
tú viste vosotros visteis
él vio Uds. vieron
ella vio ellos vieron
Ud. vio ellas vieron
Notice that the verb ver is regular. It does not carry an accent mark on the third-person singular, vio, because the form has only one syllable.
